Conservation and Energy Development: How Kentucky Nature Preserves’ Biological Assessment Tool Can Benefit Both

Are you planning to build a substation, work on a power line, or develop a solar project in Kentucky? The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves (OKNP) is hosting a free webinar about a helpful online tool called the Kentucky Biological Assessment Tool.

This tool lets you create a report for your project area that lists any rare or endangered plants and animals found there. It helps you meet environmental requirements and makes it easier to identify protected species. The tool uses information from Kentucky’s Natural Heritage Database, which has data on over 20,000 rare plants, animals, and special natural areas. It also provides extra recommendations, such as whether your project is near important bat habitats.

Thanks to support from the Office of Energy Policy, anyone working on an energy project can use this tool for free until June 2028.

In the webinar, GIS Analyst Sydnie Hansen and Database Administrator Alexis Sheehan will show you how the tool works and how it can help energy developers protect Kentucky’s natural resources.
