Heinrich Releases Fact Sheet Highlighting How Clean Energy is Keeping the Lights on During Extreme Heat
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, released a new fact sheet detailing how clean energy and energy storage resources have lessened the likelihood of power outages this summer and strengthened the reliability of the nation’s electric grid.
This summer, as our grid is constrained the most due to increased energy usage, communities across the United States have faced dangerous, record-breaking heat, making reliable electricity a matter of public health and safety. During extreme heat, power outages can leave people without air conditioning for hours or even days, putting older adults, children, and other vulnerable Americans at serious risk.
Despite clean energy being the cheapest, fastest source to deploy, the Trump administration has continuously blocked clean energy projects from connecting to the grid. If those actions continue, over 90% of planned new electricity generation capacitycould be prevented from coming online in the next several years, straining our energy grid even further and increasing the likelihood of power outages.
“Extreme heat is putting more pressure on our electric grid, and Americans need to know that when they flip the switch, the power will be there. Clean, American-made energy can help us meet growing demand, lower energy costs, strengthen the grid, and keep the lights and air conditioning on,” said Heinrich. “That is why it makes no sense that President Trump continues to block and stall new clean energy projects from connecting to the grid. Every summer, our grid faces an increase in demand, leaving communities across the country at risk of power outages that can be life-threatening. We should be building more reliable, affordable energy – not putting up more roadblocks.”
The fact sheet finds that clean energy resources are already helping meet growing electricity demand and improve grid reliability. Between June 2025 and May 2026, as more clean energy sources connected to the grid, these sources increased available energy capacity, reducing the likelihood of power outages in regions across the country.
