Egypt on Track to Finalize First Nuclear Power Plant
At the World Atomic Week event in Moscow, Esmat provided an update on the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), which is set to feature four reactors. This ambitious project is a collaborative effort between Moscow and Cairo. Esmat assured that the development is progressing as planned and, once the initial reactors are operational, authorities will reassess the potential for additional units.
“We may consider the construction of additional units. However, first we need to finish building the initial four, which is scheduled to be completed in 2029,” Esmat explained.
The plant’s nuclear fuel will be supplied by Rosatom, Russia's state energy giant, which has been overseeing the project since its inception in 2017. Each of the four reactors will generate 1.2 GW of power, and the first unit is expected to be operational by 2028, as announced by Rosatom CEO Aleksey Likhachev in November 2024.
The project is governed by comprehensive agreements, with Rosatom not only responsible for the design and construction but also for training Egyptian personnel for the first ten years of operations. Additionally, Rosatom will oversee the establishment of the necessary fuel storage infrastructure.
Rosatom's expansion efforts extend across sub-Saharan Africa, with increasing demand for nuclear energy solutions as a means of fueling development. Ryan Collyer, CEO of Rosatom in Central and Southern Africa, highlighted that the company is already collaborating with several African nations on energy projects, including a notable proposal involving floating power units in Ghana.
In a related development, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Moscow on Thursday. Following their talks, Rosatom and the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry signed an action plan to develop a nuclear energy project in Ethiopia.
