US Lawmakers Press for End to Cuba Oil Restrictions Amid Deepening Crisis

(MENAFN) A group of US legislators known as the Congressional Black Caucus has called on the Trump administration to discontinue restrictions on Cuba’s access to oil, arguing that current policy is intensifying an already severe humanitarian situation on the island.

In a formal letter addressed to President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the caucus—led by Chairwoman Yvette D. Clarke—urged the administration to remove energy-related restrictions and broader sanctions. According to reports, the lawmakers argue that these measures have aggravated shortages of food, fuel, and other essential goods, worsening daily life for Cuban citizens.

The caucus further contends that the impact of US policy is being felt most strongly by ordinary people rather than political leadership, pointing to deteriorating social and economic conditions. It highlighted concerns including rising infant mortality, growing food insecurity, and a continued decline in living standards.

“Under the administration’s oil blockade and tightening of sanctions, Cubans are dying,” wrote Clarke, citing reporting that Cuba’s infant mortality rate has more than doubled since 2018.

The statement represents a notable escalation in criticism of US policy toward Cuba, with the caucus directly challenging the administration’s approach and arguing that it has deepened civilian hardship. It called for a shift toward humanitarian considerations and relief-focused measures.

“Enough is enough,” Clarke wrote, demanding that the administration end the oil blockade, lift sanctions and allow Cubans access to essential resources.

The appeal comes at a time when Cuba is experiencing significant economic strain, with persistent fuel shortages and widespread food insecurity affecting everyday life across the country, according to reports. The Congressional Black Caucus framed its position as part of a broader commitment to humanitarian principles and the protection of vulnerable populations.

As of now, the Trump administration has not publicly responded to the caucus’s request.
